First round matches of the tournament St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy were played on Tuesday, February 9, at the two stadiums of the event – SIBUR-ARENA and Dinamo.

The Hungarian Timea Babos outlasted the qualifier from the Czech Republic Katerina Siniakova –  7
6 (7), 7/5. Another Czech – Klara Koukalova – succumbed to the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (4/6, 6/4, 4/6).

Qualifier Tamira Paszek from Austria fell in two sets to the German Karina Witthoeft (3/6, 3/6). But then another qualifier – the Ukrainian Katerina Kozlova – outplayed the Czech Barbora Strycova (6/3, 6/4). The Belgian Yanina Wickmayer came over the Latvian Elena Ostapenko 6/4, 6/3. On Wednesday night Wickmayer takes on the second seed – US Open 2015 runner-up Roberta Vinci.

Meanwhile wild card holder Natalia Vikhlyantseva lost to the Romanian Monica Niculescu – 0/6, 3/6. In the last match  of the day Margarita Gasparyan from Russia prevailed over the Serb Bojana Jovanovski – 6/1, 6/2.

As to the doubles matches, one should single out the easy win scored by Kremlin Cup 2015 champions Daria Kasatkina and Elena Vesnina who beat the Russo-Slovakian duo Anastasia BukhankoDominika Cibulkova (6/0, 6/1).

On Wednesday, February 10, the German Laura Siegemund and the French Kristina Mladenovic will be the first to step on court. Russia’s hopeful – 18-year old Daria Kasatkina will also play her first singles match. She is to square off with the Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.
